I heard that carafate is a synthetic compound that is taken by mouth to treat and prevent ulcers of the stomach and duodenum. It is often used to treat gastritis (inflammation) of the stomach. Carafate is also helpful in treating the heartburn-like discomfort of esophagitis, a condition caused by stomach acid regurgitating up into the esophagus.
Carafate Tablets and Suspension are used for the short-term treatment (up to 8 weeks) of an active duodenal ulcer; Carafate Tablets are also used for longer-term therapy at a reduced dosage after a duodenal ulcer has healed.
Carafate helps ulcers heal by forming a protective coating over them

Carafat is a drug normally prescribed to patients suffering from an ulcer (its actions protect the stomach from enzyme, acid and bile salts). It is also commonly known as Sulcrafate.

Carafate is usually prescribed to people suffering from ulcers (it treats and helps prevent ulcer). But Sulcrafate can also serve other purposes which have not been stated here.
